 Reflexology - What is it?

Reflexology is a form of therapy where pressure is applied to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears. These points correspond to different body areas, organs, and systems, and stimulating them can enhance overall health and well-being by promoting relaxation and energy balance.

Reflexologists utilize Reflex Maps to identify areas requiring attention. Zone therapy categorizes the body into zones that extend from the head to the toes, with reflex points associated with these zones. Clearing these points may facilitate natural healing and energy flow. The benefits of reflexology include stress reduction, pain alleviation, and improved circulation, among others. Reflexology is typically safe when conducted by a certified practitioner, but it is advisable to consult a physician if there are any concerns about potential conflicts.

What happens in a session?

1. Before the Session

  • Consultation:

    • Wet will discuss your medical history, current health concerns, and goals for the session.
    • You’ll be asked about any areas of discomfort or specific issues you’d like to address (e.g., stress, digestion, or chronic pain).
  • Preparation:

    • You’ll be seated or lay down if you prefer on a massage table, fully clothed except for your shoes and socks.
    • Ensuring you are comfortable, often using cushions or blankets.

2. During the Session

  • Foot Cleansing:

    • Your feet will be gently cleansed to prepare them for the treatment.
  • Introduction to the Technique:

    • Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears that correspond to different organs and systems of the body.
    • If your feet can not be treated then your hands can be used in the same way.
  • Targeted Pressure:

    • Using thumbs and fingers to massage and apply pressure to these reflex points.
    • Areas of tenderness or sensitivity may indicate imbalances in the corresponding body part or system.
    • You will be asked about any issues if any arise.
  • Whole-Body Focus:

    • While the session often focuses on the feet/hands the entire body’s well-being is addressed through the reflex points.
    • Techniques vary from light touch to deeper pressure, depending on your needs.
  • Relaxation Techniques:

    • The session incorporates rhythmic movements to promote relaxation and improve energy flow.

3. Sensations During Reflexology

  • Relaxation:
    • Most people find the treatment deeply soothing and may feel drowsy or enter a meditative state.
  • Tender Spots:
    • Some areas might feel tender or sensitive, indicating a potential area of imbalance, but the pressure is adjusted to ensure comfort.

4. After the Session

  • Immediate Effects:
    • You may feel deeply relaxed, refreshed, or energized.
    • Some people report a tingling sensation or warmth in the body as energy pathways are stimulated.
  • Hydration:
    • Drinking water is recommended to help flush out toxins released during the session.
  • Emotional Release:
    • Reflexology can sometimes bring up emotions or memories as the body and mind work to restore balance.

5. Duration and Frequency

  • A session typically lasts 45-60 minutes.
  • Regular sessions may be recommended for chronic issues, while occasional sessions are great for general relaxation and maintenance.

6. Benefits of Reflexology

  • Promotes relaxation and stress relief.
  • Improves circulation and energy flow.
  • Reduces pain and discomfort in various parts of the body.
